Even though the name translates into 'the dream' in English, 'Le Reve' at the Wynn Las Vegas has been anything but a nice dream for Steve Wynn since its inception.
The show has been a few ripples in the water tank and in today's era of short leashes and profit margins in the entertainment world, it's refreshing to see someone willing to invest in an attempt to make the customer experience as good as it can be, rather than closing up shop when issues arise.Created by ex-Cirque du Soleil-er Franco Dragone, the show was so dark and brooding that it reportedly caused the mogul's wife, Elaine Wynn, to cry when she first saw it and the tears were not of a joyous nature.
Franco would end up leaving over creative differences while Hollywood special effects artists were brought in to make the dream less of a nightmare.
Then came news that 'Le Reve' would go dark for a month while Wynn spent $8-million to renovate the theater to bring in more luxury.
Some of the criticism for the show has been that it's too much like a Cirque du Soleil show. Given the 'Le Reve's' pedigree, there's no doubt that Cirque is in the show's DNA; it would be impossible for it to not be. Dragone also created Celine Dion's show at Caesars Palace and you can see Cirque-like qualities there. Critics point out that 'Le Reve' even shares water like 'O' by Cirque du Soleil, but the theater-in-the-round experience adds a fresh perspective on the aquatic acrobatics and theatrics.
The bottom line is that it's a Vegas show that has its own characters, its own plot and its own production. That's like Lance Burton should have never launched his headlining show at the Monte Carlo in 1996 because there were other magic shows in Vegas. You can't please everyone, but now there's another reason to see 'Le Reve.' The show is open again and even offers a 'VIP Indulgence Package' package which is one of the best deals on the Strip, especially when you consider the deal can be found at 'the only casino resort in the world to have the Mobil Five Star and AAA Five Diamond rating.'
For $159 per person, you get plush seats in the 'Champagne Circle' with a bottle of Perrier Jouet Champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries and perhaps even more interesting, monitors that allow you to watch the behind-the-scenes action as well as underwater and aerial views during the show.
It will be interesting to see how this elevates show packaging here with other shows at other casinos, but for right now, just as he did with Mirage, Bellagio, Wynn Las Vegas and Mystere, it seems like Steve Wynn is once again changing how we are entertained in Vegas.
Or at least that's the dream.
