Vegas Celebrity Chefs Nominated for 2007 James Beard Awards

Guy Savoy and staff in Vegas

Congratulations are in order for Guy Savoy and his staff (pictured above) whose acclaimed Restaurant Guy Savoy at Caesars Palace is nominated for a prestigious James Beard Award in the 'Best New Restaurant' category. LUXE LIFE has been a fan of the restaurant since opening its doors almost one year ago. The James Beard Award winners will be announced on May 7, just 10 days before Guy Savoy's one year anniversary.

Wolfgang Puck in Vegas Vegas' celebrity chefs are well represented in the nominations list. Joining Guy Savoy in the 'Best New Restaurant' category is Joel Robuchon's Manhattan outlet of L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon and Wolfgang Puck's Beverly Hills hot spot, CUT. LUXE LIFE readers know that Chef Puck is bringing CUT to Vegas to debut at the new Palazzo resort at the Venetian in the fall of this year joining the five other Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group's Vegas eateries Spago, Chinois, Postrio, Trattoria del Lupo and Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill.

Thomas Keller is nominated in the 'Best Restaurateur.' The nominees in this category must be actively involved in multiple restautrants which in addition to his per se in New York and The French Laundry and Bouchon in Northern California, Chef Keller has a Bouchon at the Venetian. Also in this category, Richard Melman of Lettuce Entertain You in Chicago operates the Eiffel Tower, Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba, Mon Ami Gabi and Joe's Seafood.

Tom Colicchio, head judge for Bravo's 'Top Chef', is nominated for Craft in New York but Vegas fans are familiar with his craftsteak at MGM Grand or have perhaps even grabbed a sandwich at 'wichcraft.

Picasso at the Bellagio has been nominated in the 'Outstanding Wine Service and Award' category.

2. There's nothing like a bald headed guy who loves to cook and loves eat. Congrats Tom. BTW 24's Carlo Rota received a James Beard award for his cuisine commentary. Food network's chef Duff deserves a nod for his cake creations

7. Interesting info on the fine restaurants around the country. I travel alot from Western Pennsylnia, New York State and New Jersey. More info from those states will be appreciated.

Am I understanding that they are being judged on that guy's opinion from the early 80's? Is that fair to judge the 2000 yr+ chefs by that standard? Is the James Beard award that important even if it's rather old-fashioned? Or am I reading all of this wrong?

How many of you can lay claim to cooking one of James Beard's last meals?

It was 1984/85ish, I don't remember the exact dates He was in the Hospital in San Francisco. If my remember serves me well it was the second time he came here for treatment, He sent an aid to the Sutter 500 I was Chef du Parte'.

It was more than an Honor that the Chef asked myself to prepare many of his Entree's. Apparently my cooking was slightly better then Hospital food.
