Waking up to the sound of the alarm has got to be the most annoying sound to a dancer. After hitting snooze three times and waiting till the very last second I finally get out of bed. Being that it's 9:20AM and I have rehearsal at 10AM, I quickly jump in the shower and dash to the Flamingo Hotel.
Even though the show has been open for a few weeks, we as dancers, are always trying to better our routines. Under the direction of JJ Villar, we review all our dance numbers, make sure our spacing on stage is perfect, and change anything that needs to be changed to make the routine work.
While all of this is going on, the technical crew is also working hard to light our show so that production value is added. According to the tech crew, in order for the 'lighting to be perfect' they need to test it directly on our bare skin requiring us drop our pants quite often during rehearsal. Sometimes a little too often.
After sweating our asses off for four hours, rehearsal ends at 2PM. A few of my cast mates and I decide to go to the spa for a 2:30PM message. We have a lot of regulars who come to the show and have been following our show for years. As a nice gesture one of our fans has given us gift certificates to spend at spa.
This is always a nice treat for our bodies and gives us as cast mates bonding time outside of the work environment.
Getting done close to 4PM, we all decide to grab a bite to eat. Despite what people may think, dancers like to eat and eat a lot. As a cast, we love food. With all the physical activity we endure during work, we can afford to eat greasy food and love it. Pizza today is the food of choice.
Now that it's around 5:30PM, I head home to see my dogs and catch a little R&R. I love to watch TV, but because the show runs during prime time television, DVR has been heaven sent.
After watching all my favorite shows and taking a nap, it's time to jump in the shower and drive to work. Our call time is at 8:30PM giving us an hour and a half to put our make-up on, do our hair, warm and limber up our muscles in a group stretch and preset all of our costumes in the show. With the show starting at 10:00PM, the other dancers and I head up two flights of stairs and begin the opening number. During the show we work very hard with all the costume changes, reapplying make-up, and running up and down the stairs.
By the end of the show, we are spent. To wind down after the show, we grab a drink at the new soon to be "X" Bar and meet our fans. That's one thing that sets us apart from other shows, the audience gets to know us personally, which is one of the reasons why we have so many regulars.
Most of us girls don't just work at 'X Burlesque,' we have second jobs after the show. A few of us work together doing aerial shows at a local club, and the other half of us work as go-go dancers in another local nightclub. At around 4AM our shifts end and we can finally go home.
I usually get a snack, watch some TV and eventually fall asleep to get up and do it all over again the next day.
This is my life. -- Shakeera Onstead, a dancer in 'X Burlesque.'
