1. Since I was a little girl my Mother always took me to the Miss America Parade that used to be held the night before the Pagneant on the boardwalk in Atlantic City (one thing that Vegas does not have), I think it was every girls dream that seen that parade to some day be Miss America. when I was old enough me and my friends would go to the parade and Pagneant and spend our weekend at the Jersey shore and when I became a Mother I took my Daughter (who is now a teenager) it was tradition in our Family. This was a positive tradition that my family had and we sorely miss it, The year they moved this Pagneant was so sad, comparing the Miss America Pagneant to Miss USA is like comparing a broadway actress to a porn star. past Miss Americas have been Doctor's, New's anchor, Lawyers and so much more.

2. I hope Miss Kentucky wins Miss America so maybe we can see some more Kentucky drama in a pageant. I think that Kentucky girls are the hottest and the wildest!!!

3. I think you shouldn't dis the Miss USA pageant. Because it helps young ladies with problems become successful women. Like Tara Conner had a problem but Miss USA helped her and know she can show the world that people care about you and that no matter who you are you can receive help. A lot of people think it's bad for her to represent the USA but really the USA is full of people like this and she represents hope that it will indeed change. Miss America on the other hand is fine but all it does is teaches women how to act like their pretty and walk around like their something. Like the Pageant School they have done it taught them nothing about the real world but about how to do good in a pageant. After this they will not need that information because that's the end of the line.

5. My daughter is competing in a city pageant that is part of the Miss America Pageant system and it doesn't just teach young women how to be in a pageant. Most of these young women haven't even been in pageants. They are young girls in their senior year of high school and college students who are involved in their communities and schools. They have a platform of their choosing in which they help the community become a better place for all and they help other young people become better people because these young ladies are good role models. People should do their research before making off the wall comments on a topic they don't know anything about.

6. It is true that America is losing interest in Beauty Pagents. Even though the raving mothers and contestants are still involved in every aspect of it. But, doesn't this have to do with how society is changing? Maybe its about how reality shows such as "The swan" brought a new eye to how plastic society is becoming, and this only made us look with disgust at beauty competitions that only leave young girls feeling "unworthy" or "ugly". Well, I'm a young girl, I'm not one who thinks anything like "I'm such a fat pig!" or "Omg! I hate my nose.. Its SO GROSS!" and I seriouly try to keep my friends from saying such things. But trying to tell them that when such shows as beauty competitions air on tv or when magazines plaster pictures of the "Ideal" American girl in all thier pages becomes really hard. I read that it was the Ancient Romans who first put prestige in beauty. They made all thier sculptures perfected and modeled them off of the beautiful. They were also the first to view blonde hair as an asset.
Since then, everywhere you go, beauty plays a role in everyone's lives. No mention of beauty being "only skin deep" seems to even help the problem.
It hurts me to see my friends suffer so much or feel bad about their body image because of society deeming them "ugly".
So why would shows like this air on tv? Simply because of the money involved- people's obsession in looks and beauty helps fund these types of shows. And however unlikely this might be, if society changed, we might all be better off.

8. Jon- I'm curious on what you're basing your opinion? Miss America is a scholarship pageant with a rigid moral code. It requires talent, and an intelligent interview before a panel of judges (that you don't see on TV and that shows the judges how fit you are for the real world), as well as beauty. It also requires a signed contract attesting to your moral fitness to serve as Miss America (granted, you could lie, but they often find out--then that contestant is disqualified, usually well before the national level.) Winning is FAR from "the end of the line"--the scholarships aside, the winner can and often does find MANY MANY doors opened to her. Leanza Cornett has gone on to a successful career in journalism, Heather Whitfield brought a great deal of attention to the hearing-disabled community...even Vanessa Williams, who was dethroned on a moral issue, has had a successful career in music and film/TV.
*I* know this from both watching the pageant (and the news) over the years, as well as experience, having competed in a local preliminary as a teenager, and having seen 2 contestants disqualified for having falsified items on their application or contract.

9. People may see it as sounding trite, but as a former beauty queen the main reason I competed was for the scholarship money given by the Miss America Pageant System. College isn't getting any cheaper, and even with scholarships earned based upon my academic merit, there was still the need for more money. With the debt of young adults coming out of college, this allowed me to need fewer dollars from student loans. People can talk about, even rant about, how terrible it is that Miss America teaches those women that compete how to be plastic dolls where Miss USA is suddenly about being real. Come on!! When did knowing how to behave like a person that respects yourself and understanding the value of your own dignity become phony? Last time I checked, it was a quality that fit nicely into any role a woman had in life. Whether that was being a CEO of a company, a mother or a college graduate student.

10. This will be the 37th year I will be watching the Miss America Pageant on TV - my only complaint with CMT's coverage is that it will be shown early at 8:00 PM (EST). I remember when NBC showed Miss America 10:00 PM EST

11. I do not watch this show. I find it funny we get all worked up over this stuff. Look, if you break the rules you pay the price right? Well, this is a New America, we can break the rules and never pay the price. Come on, lets relax, who cares about beauty this and that? Nice to see a small American again. To keep 50 on a stage is a miracle within itself. Now, one out of fifty or maybe one out of twenty-five having a drinking problem or some other problem, that is a good ration in our New America. However, if we break a rule, then pay the price. Oppps forgot , New America. I have to take a drug test to do my job. Funny , if I break that rule, I am fired. MMMMMMM however if you are a King or Queen of something or drawing a social program check all is fine. Who cares about this contest? Not me.

12. I feel that we as a society have moved beyond pageants! I understand there are lots of benefits with scholarships, moral contracts ect.. but lets be honest. Have you ever seen anyone in the Miss America pageant with big legs? What are we really promoting?

14. Interesting comments... I, too, am a mother of a young lady who competes. A young lady with a huge heart, whose goal is to teach special education - something that she must win Scholarships to be able to complete her education to do. The Miss America system grants an amazing amount of Scholarship money - and you don't have to win a TITLE to win the money. You just have to place, or even win a section (Interview, Talent, etc). Have I seen a girl with big legs win at the regional level? You betcha! At the State or National level, not that I can recall - but the current Miss America is no stick figure. She looks healthy and normal (whatever "normal" is). To the young ladies competing - You GO Girl! You have accomplished so much to get to where you are, and there are nothing but winners on that stage. And our nation is nothing but better off for the educational opportunities afforded our amazing young women through this system.

I feel Miss America teaches women the wrong things.You never see plus size women in a pagent.The world teaches you that you have to be thin and almost anorexia in some cases.I don't feel that is right.Women are all sizes.You don't have to be thin to be pretty.Personality to me is important,but some dont have that.Its not all about looks.This is my impressions.
